COUNCIL OAK - South Bend, Indiana
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
"The French explorer Robert Rene Cavalier Sieur de La Salle landed on the
banks of the St. Joseph River, in December 1679, at what is now Riverview
Cemetery. Two years later, in 1681, in the area today known as Highland
Cemetery, under the shade of a great oak tree, La Salle held a council with
Indian leaders, which led to the Miami Treaties. The oak tree, Council Oak,
stood in Highland Cemetery for years, until disease and an unfortunate
lightening strike resulted in its removal in 1992."

"They come to see the famous Council Oak Tree, where Rene Robert
Cavalier Sieur de LaSalle and approximately thirty other men along with the
Miami and Illinois Indians signed a treaty. It was LaSalle's intention to bring
the smaller tribes together to withstand the mighty war parties of the
Iroquois Indians. The Iroquois came to this area to terrorize the local tribes.
The Council Oak Tree is a historical landmark. The tree was said to be at
least 400 years old. In 1937 and 1987 the tree was hit by lightning and then in
August of 1991 the old tree succumbed to the wind. The only thing left of the
tree is a massive stump along with a bronze plaque. Council Oak Jr, planted
by a South Bend teacher in the 1960's from an acorn off of Council Oak is
across the drive."
