GRIPES AND GLORIES _____________________________________________________________________________________________
Overall, the 1st Annual Indiana Woodcarvers Summer Camp was a great success! The dates have been decided and the 2nd Annual Woodcarvers Summer Camp will be August 18-21, 2010.
The campground was happy with the results, ALL of our vendors have indicated that they wish to return, and so far 90% of the instructors have requested a spot in next years event! Also, both bands had a great time performing for us and would like to return.
Complaints were few, thank yous numerous, and praise has been tremendously encouraging. I am tickled pink to tell you that I have received wonderful letters from attendees who let us know they had a great time and plan to return next year...with their friends!
If you have any suggestions to help improve the 2010 Indiana Woodcarvers Summer Camp - please email them to Marcia@counciloakwoodcarvers.com or you can send an anonymous letter to Marcia Yrineo, 318 Teri Street, South Bend, IN 46614-2635. ______________________________________________________________________ All suggestions will be seriously considered and next year we will implement changes based on your feedback. For example, based on feedback so far:
1.Rod (campground owner) is already planning to improve the lighting and power sources in the main building.
2. Power carving dust and noise in the main building was our biggest complaint and has been resolved. Orlando Villareal has promised to return and will be located in a private tent adjacent to the main building.
3. T-Shirt sales and raffle items and raffle ticket sales will be moved near the front entrance of the building. True Woodcarving & Supplies will have the spot where registration was in 2009.
4. An effort will be made to encourage chainsaw carving participation next year.
5. There was one official report of theft (and rumor of another) for which we are truly sorry. This was not anticipated, although when events are open to the public there is always a risk. Next year there will be people assigned to pay special attention to loss prevention.
6. Most instructors liked the free and relaxed format that we used (similar to the Evart, Michigan Roundup and Honesdale, Pennsylvania Roundup. A few instructors felt that it is better for them to have more structure, charge a fee, and require sign-ups for their class, similar to the Florida Roundup . Instructors will be allowed to require sign-up in advance and charge a reasonable instructor's fee for each person per day (in addition to the cost of the wood projects), if they so desire. It will not be mandatory, so the free & relaxed atmosphere can be preserved as much as possible. In these days and times, there are many carvers struggling financially and we want to include very inexpensive projects and carving opportunities that are affordable to those on tight budgets. But we also know that some instructors travel a long distance and must cover their expenses, so in all fairness, we will let each instructor decide.
7. Every effort will be made to acquire pure white tents. The red & white tent was a blessing when it rained, (donated by All Seasons Tent & Party Rental of Nappanee, Indiana), but the red stripes caused an eerie glow inside the tent.
8. A soap carving table will be included for kids and adults with an appropriate instructor. (Marcia is our club's soap carver for children's projects and she was too busy this year.) The YAM Carving table for kids and adults was a huge success and will be repeated also.
9. Next years event will start on a Wednesday morning through Saturday evening, with campground checkout by noon on Sunday. You are welcome to arrive early or stay longer.
10. Instructors will be required to check in with a seating coordinator upon arrival - to assure that they set up their tables in the right area.
11. During stage presentations at non-carving times, the audience will be warned not to sit at tables with a DO NOT DISTURB sign posted on them.
12. A map of teachers/projects will be available at registration. All instructor's names & projects will be displayed above or on their tables.
13. A lot of people wanted to WATCH the SPAM Carving contest, but only 3 people signed up to carve and they were not available at the time the contest was to happen. Therefore, there were no proceeds to share with the Marshall County Food Bank. A donation will be made in the name of Indiana Woodcarvers from the summer camp funds to help feed the hungry over the holidays.
If you would like to make a personal donation - the address is: Food Bank of Northern Indiana 702 Chapin Street South Bend, IN 466
